در ادبیات فارسی، قلب سیاه‌رنگ شقایق، به «داغ» تشبیه شده که از هجران و دوری یار به وجود آمده است. گل شقایق در بیابانها به صورت خودرو رشد می کند. این گل در کنار زیبایی هایی که دارد خواص درمانی هم دارد، ولی کسی از آن آگاه نیست. به عنوان مثال یکی از خواص شقایق درمان آبسه دندان است. همچنین این گیاه برای بیماران آسمی مفید است. قدیمی ها این گیاه وحشی و خودرو را می شناخته اند. شورا میگوید: «تخم و دانه های شقایق شکم را پاک میکند.» دیو سنسکورید جوشاندهٔ کپسول شقایق را در شراب برای تحریک خواب تجویز میکرد و برگها را می کوبید و به صورت پماد آن را برای درمان ورم مصرف میکرد.وجود مقادير بسيار اندك تركيبات “اوپيوئيدي” در عصاره اين گياه ، سبب شده تا عصاره اين گياه را “ترياك بي‌زيان” بنامند. ساير گونه‌هاي اين گياه مي‌تواند خطرات سمي زيادي داشته باشد .
